My wife and I lived in New Haven for over 3 years (1 downtown and 2 East Rock) and loved it. The city is fantastic, super walkable, with lots going on. We moved there not knowing anyone and joined an adult kickball league (WAKA) and meet basically all our current adult friends there.

Other then a single nighttime parking garage car break in (which can happen anywhere) we had zero issues with crime or feeling unsafe. It’s the perfect small city with museums, concerts, epic food, and fantastic train access. I’d highly recommend New Haven.

WAKA kickball out of New Haven or Hartford is fantastic for meeting people. My wife and I joined when we first moved to New Haven not knowing anyone and meet some of our new best friends. It’s a social league so tailgating and going to the bar after is more important then the game. Sunday’s became an all day event.

I don’t know why some people are recommending Amtrak, it’s much more expensive and for distances not covered by commuter rail.

You can take the Hartford Line to New Haven from Meriden then switch train in New Haven to go straight to Grand Central. Or if you don’t want to switch trains drive to West Haven (free weekend parking, New Haven garages are pricey). Metro North trains are fantastic, electric, and reasonably cheap. You can get tickets on the MTA Traintime app or a kiosk in the station (weekdays are off peak and much cheaper).

Google or Apple Maps can help you plan (switch to transit and put in the station address) or Hartfordline.com or https://new.mta.info/agency/metro-north-railroad
