Because it was very important to the course of the video game market. It sucked and that's the point. Landmark game doesn't just mean what game was good that year, it's what was important.

As big as they were at the time Guitar Hero (and rhythm games in general in the west, really) has gone extinct by now. Pretty much just a quirky relic of the 2000s with no real impact.

I played the demo for Rise first and could not for the life of me figure it out, even on the simpler weapons. Got the Stories spinoff, fell in love with it, and went back to the demo to give it another shot and finally managed to get it to click.

You could try Monster Hunter maybe. You won't be slicing through hordes of enemies or anything and there's a bit of a learning curve but let me tell you there is no feeling as good as landing a fully-charged true charged slash with a greatsword.
