I tels you, my current Scottish boss has completely ruined me for having an American manager even again. We were halfway through March and the guy is telling me he's worried because I haven't yet put in any requests against my unlimited vacation time.

My cat from college put up with soooo much manhandling from my older two kids. And he really did put up with it without complaint. If it got too rough he'd walk away, but usually be right back a few seconds later. We're pretty sure he decided to check out for good when he realized there was a third kid on the way.

2 weeks later a friendly stray showed up on the back deck all "I hear you have an opening".

I said something similar about Avengers Endgame. A single-digit year gap is exactly the worst duration for someone to be away. If it's weeks or months, no problem, most aspects you really can step right back into your old life. If it's a decade or more, there's just no question about it: not happening. But a couple of years? You probably won't, but there's just enough of a possibility that that hope winds up wrecking you.

I was already wfh, but it's just wonderful serendipity that we got a dog towards the end of January 2020, right when covid was starting to become a household word.
