It was a matter of time if he's still closeted. I was accidently outed by my femme BF when I was much younger than you two are, and yes admittedly some chaos followed, but it's what I expected from my family - and it went over much better than I had ever pictured.
I think you should take him at face value when he says it isn't your fault and he'll handle the aftermath. All you can do now is support him through said aftermath. Remember, it was flirting with the inevitable anyways.
Support him through whatever happens. That's more than likely all he could ask for.
