Definitely recommend Merlin as others have said. And then eBird once you get going to track your progress and be a bit more advanced with it!

Otherwise Merlin coupled with a solid pair of binoculars will have you pretty fluent in no time.

As a newer JC resident (~2yrs) but frequenter of LSP (a least every other week), do those that are ardently against outside development have any proposals to improve the park in its current state?

I wander all over the park birding but can’t help but notice…

  • grove of remembrance routinely overgrown in the summer, including the 9/11 roundabout plaque area
  • south cove beach and black Tom piers littered with tidal ocean trash
  • nature center pond choked off with algae
  • nature center trails and vegetation blanketed by invasive vines
  • sink holes along north cove waters edge
  • half sunken boat along south entryway (since sandy?)

I love this park and am thrilled to track the countless wildlife species I’ve found within. Similarly I understand the land’s industrial past and the drastic changes in the last few decades and have seem small investments the past few years….

But still seems unfinished and underutilized given how close it is to do many residents. People only congregate in the RR terminal, the central play ground and waters edges. The vast middle is always empty.

Guess what I want to say for those so against development plans— are we happy as it is or what else is there to do?
