Look for handmade, with a solid wooden shaft. Fox Umbrellas, Swaine Adeney Brigg, and James Smith & Sons make good umbrellas.

So you have headphones on when talking to friends? In this situation wouldn't speakers be better so everyone can hear the music?

Yeah, because most people use headphones for portability, where audio quality is not a priority. Why use headphones at home? They'll never sound as good as a hi-fi speaker system. I've tried.

They're also vastly more inefficient because they're using the air that it just cooled to vent the heat outside. EIther way, it's bound to break down in a few years. I've purchased on the order of 20 units and not had one last more than 5 years.
If possible, use a window unit. Cheaper, quieter, more reliable, more efficient.

A little more obscure than Bosch, but I've found them to be superior and last longer. PIAA Si-Tech. Lasts 5-7 years for me with no streaking.
