I've driven every type of drive with every type of tire in pretty much every level of snowy road. AWD/4WD is only useful for getting up steep driveways in serious conditions. I drove a rwd sedan with winters for year in the Bangor area and never once wasn't able to drive somewhere or makes it up any hills on actual roads.

As others have said it doesn't help you stop or turn which the cause of 99% of snowy accidents.

Awful take. We need both, public transport and easier access to towns lying west of Portland. The housing crisis in the Greater Portland can be solved by edging west which will never be a feasible area for public transport, these people will need to get near Portland easily, then an efficient public transit system could bring them into town to solve the parking issue. Simply saying EVERYTHING IS BAD EXCEPT TRAINS!! is so a non-nuanced opinion that screams "if the solution isn't perfect we shouldn't do it" and surprise surprise: No solution is ever perfect.

I'm about as liberal as they come, but the Maine Republican's suggestion to create tax advantaged heating assistance accounts similar to HSA's sounded like a good idea to me. The $450 now is needed in the short term, but next winter is going to be just more of the same and handing out cash endlessly is not the answer...
