Whatever it was, I think it was just lonely. I asked him and he said he had a similar experience only about 20 minutes before I arrived. After we made it out, my phone said only about an hour had passed from arriving at the school to leaving, but it certainly felt like much longer.

I sent an anonymous email to the school letting them know to brick it up. Surely nothing bad could come of that.
