He really was one of a kind though, his escapades with the Hells Angels was nuts.

Doesn't work for me, since Pádraic says they aren't even at the end. If Colm had died they would be even.

Bit odd since movies etc. are also equally 'made up'.
But maybe try branching out of your usual genres might just be you are too familiar with genre tropes.

Its difficult to say I think, simply because the understanding of mental health was wildly different when the book was written.
Its quite possible it was intended by the understanding of the time that he was not supposed to be there but by today's knowledge he may be diagnosed with something!

Because everything is now wrapped up in all sorts of legalese which means it's not legal to download and keep them.
Digital copies are essentially long term rentals.
There are exceptions but I think that's generally the case.

This is a rare occasion I'd say no don't bother. Personally I found the 1st the best by far. The others are less interesting and only dilute the mystery.
