You might like RTR Pilates. They have a location in McArhtur in the Palisades and another near the Friendship Heights Metro. With the intro offer, you can try a lot of different classes and instructors for a month to see how well it works for you.

Within 4 miles is 30 min or less commute by car.

Generally, western Montgomery County is going to be expensive. The detached single family homes in that area are over $1 million. Silver Spring can be more affordable. It has the walkability of an urban area and some ok breweries and restaurants as well as a movie theater and music venue. Takoma and Takoma Park have great apartments. That area has a small town vibe with a lot of local eateries, a farm market, a couple of cute shops. You might also consider Walter Reed off of Georgia Avenue. It’s in the process of being developed and there are some apartments already leasing.

If you’re looking for more affordable, you might try renting an English basement in Brightwood or looking further out on the red line (Wheaton, White Flint). Fort Totten and Petworth on green aren’t far either. They’ll both get you closer to the heart of the city. Each spot has its own distinct vibe and trade-offs. If you can, come ride the Metro and get off in areas you’d be interested in during different parts of the day. You’ll see how much life there is and whether you feel comfortable walking around.

You have a right to heat, 68° during the day and 65° overnight from October 1 to May 1. It sounds like you reported the problem when you could no longer maintain those temps in the unit and like the landlord fixed it reasonably quickly in spite of the holiday weekend.

Typically, the only time you can deduct from your rent is if you yourself must make the repair because the landlord has not responded within a reasonable amount of time or if the repair is necessary immediately to ensure the safety and habitability of your residence.

While I don’t doubt your bill was higher this month, the outdoor temperatures alone can cause that even when a building is in good repair. There’s no way to prove what portion was due to poor weatherproofing.

The federal government puts up $6-7 million for Independence Day celebrations, which mostly amount to musical performances and fireworks. DC also also spends a few million from its Emergency Planning and Security Fund. With NYC dominating the “national” NYE celebration, you won’t see the feds putting up millions for a DC-based celebration. If, somehow, a private org wanted to put something together on the Mall, they’d have to work with NPS, and that permitting process is quite onerous.

Seconded! Pet sitting services are often asked about on this forum, and for some reason the first recommendation for Sit-a-Pet gets downvoted every time. However, I had a great experience using them for seven years. The central office assigns you a sitter who will be the person to visit your home. You’ll stick with that person unless they are taking time off. The central office keeps your key in between pet sitting gigs, so there’s a layer of safety. They also keep a record of back-up contacts who can access your home in an emergency. The company is also diligent about recording your emergency vet, how to reach you, and what to do in household emergencies, like plumbing leaks.

Most important, my cats were always perfectly happy when I came home. Their food bowls and litter boxes were immaculate. Also, our front door camera showed that the sitter spent at least 30 minutes per visit interacting with the cats.

Brookville in Friendship Heights is a small, independent pharmacy. It serves mostly elderly residents in its zip code, so it’s a place that’s less likely to have a run on its limited supply.

As much as ditching your celebration would suck, your holidays are going to suck more if you lose your belongings. You might be able to stop the eviction, or you might be able to prove it’s illegal and get some sort of remedy after the fact. Regardless, if you want to safeguard your stuff, it’s probably best to be back in DC.

Whatever happens, it sounds like you’re losing your housing within the next few months. Time to get a storage unit and make plans to stay somewhere until you lock down a more stable situation. Probably best to apply for new apartments before an eviction potentially hits your credit report.

But, yeah, contact OTA as soon as possible. That may help delay any action taken by the landlord.

Have you tried contacting the Park Service? The C&O office is 301-739-4200. It’s possible someone turned it in to them.

On Saturday the group to the left of you in Hades Heights was affiliated with the Cathedral Schools. You might try contacting the outdoor ed coach John Velosky at St. Albans to see if he spotted a license while doing a final sweep after his group left.
