Wait until you first hurricane. Folks will bend over backwards to help each other, but they do it with both eyes open. You go a week with no power, food & water running out, and zero effective government presence. You'll see the absolute best and worst of humanity.

I'm old enough to remember kids getting in trouble for speaking French in school. I barely speak any at all. :-(

The poor boy sandwich was created in New Orleans in 1929 when the Electric Street Railway employees went on strike, and the Martin brothers gave away sandwiches to the strikers. The original Martin poor boy sandwiches were typically fried potatoes, gravy, and spare bits of roast beef on French bread.
