I've lived in Malden too. I consider Malden a postage stamp sized version of Worcester, very similar cities, IMHO
I can't speak to living on Vernon Hill, but I enjoy living in Worcester.

Pretty much every question in this feed that is the form of "Where in Worcester can I do/get <blank>?", includes at least one answer of "Well, there's a good one in out in Sturbridge/Oxford/Westboro etc...."

You'll be driving through the core of the city on I-290 all the time.
In the afternoons, going south it is backed up from about 3:30 - untill 6:00 PM going Southwest towards Auburn. (01606 is the Northeast side of the city.) I can't speak to what the morning commute is like coming Northeast.
Do not put too much stock on the people telling you to flee towards the suburbs. I moved to the city in 2014 (01609) and have loved it here. It is nice to be able to walk to places when we want.
But if you do choose to look outside the city limits, then given your work zipcode, then West Boylston or Holden would be better choices. The burbs to the east (Shrewsbury, Northborogh, etc...) are much more expensive.

During the Punk Rock hey days, a local DJ bestowed that nickname on Worcester.

Yes, and the one at the top of the hill is yards away from the new Stop sign at the Bancroft Tower Rd intersection, where cars are slowing anyway ( although, full complete stops are rare! )

Maybe because that meme is about 10 years old now? SM people at the city need to stay up to date?

You are working in Polar Park for WooSox games? If yes, you should get a pass for the employee lot across the street.
