Chiming in about quality of doctors here. Moved here from MA and switched to an RI PCP. He ordered some bloodwork when I had my first visit. I had a bad feeling about this doctor, like he was barely interested in doing his job. I’m older with my share of medical issues, so after a few months I decided to switch back to my Boston doctors. I had my RI doctors office send my lab results to Boston. A couple of days later I got a call from Boston, telling me there were some alarming results in my bloodwork and that I should come in. My RI doc had these results for months and obviously never looked at them.

So, my story is completely anecdotal and is a sample size of exactly one doctor, so take this with an enormous grain of salt. That being said, it’s a story I feel is relevant here.

A guy doing side-work when he has a job is fine(assuming he’s insured), but a guy stealing work from his employer is shady. You’ll probably be fine and save a few dollars, but it’s not really a cool thing to do.

I’m in a different line of work and what I do is heavily marked up so I often have clients try to make an end-run around my employer and hire me directly but I always refuse. I do plenty of side work but only what comes to me first, never my employer’s clients.

I think you can buy new ones from the DPW, assuming they have any (took months to replace mine when it was broken). Explain what happened and maybe they won’t charge you for it ( although that is probably hopelessly naive on my part). I’m sure you’re not the only one who’s bins blew away yesterday.

I recently joined LA Fitness in Garden City. I was very hesitant as the reviews online were terrible (filthy club, jerky staff & members, busted cardio machines), but since it is literally a five minute walk from my house I looked into it anyway. I was given an extended guest membership and in that time I didn’t see anything like what was mentioned in the reviews. People were nice, it seemed about as clean as any other chain gym like Planet. No broken machines that I encountered. I mentioned this when I signed up and apparently they have new mgmt who are committed to improving the place. I do think it’s too expensive (I’m paying $34/mo) and it should be more like $10-20/mo, but it’s worth it for me as proximity removes an excuse for not going and I need all the motivation I can get . I can’t really speak to locker room cleanliness as I don’t use it. So, that’s what I have to say about this place. If it seems like a possible fit, give it a chance, they seem to have taken the bad reviews seriously.

My old roommate once challenged a ticket on the grounds that he was guilty but had lost his job and simply couldn’t afford it. Judge had violation changed to a $25 parking ticket, so no hit on insurance. I’m sure it helps that he is a very charming, likable guy; if it were me they would have tripled it.

The more credible mediums are the ones best schooled in reading people and presenting common situations and events in terms vague enough that someone who wants to believe can easily shoehorn their experiences into these vague suggestions. They then read the mark (that would be you in this case) for cues as to how to proceed further along with whatever suggestion they make that appears to have landed. You see the same thing in astrology: ascribe common strengths and weaknesses to each sign and it’s easy to see yourself and others in them, if you want to believe.

I’ve had Cox for about a year and a half of extremely heavy use and I have no complaints. I generate enormous files (50-100gb) for work, and we have multiple streaming tvs in the house. No issues with speed or reliability.

Thanks for all the input everyone. In case any future readers want to know, I went there last night and did not see it as badly as all the negative reviews had led me to expect. I dealt with two people, both of whom were pleasant and attentive with no hard sell. It didn’t strike me as unusually dirty, just a typical chain gym. Could certainly have been a little nicer but wasn’t off-putting to me. I didn’t try every piece of equipment but I didn’t see any out of order signs either. I was there on a Friday evening just after five and it was busy but not uncomfortably so. I took them up on the offer of a free pass, which they extended from a couple of days to a full week after I informed them I was concerned about how busy it would be on weekdays. I’ll give it a shot and revise this post if I decide not to join, but I’m pretty sure I will. It’s not the prettiest gym but it has what I want and is super convenient for me so I’m hopeful.

Reply to RI drivers by [deleted]

We moved to RI about a year and a half ago and were warned that the drivers here were really something special. I’ve lived in a few places, everyone says that kind of thing. Nope, they really are special here, I routinely witness something insane on the road whenever I go out.

I’m genuinely curious about your thought process here. Was it something like, “Oh, here’s a young person trying to better themselves and going through a bit of anxiety. Now seems a good time to insert a point that has nothing to do with their problem but will probably make them feel just a little bit worse.”

I’m not claiming anything; I agree that the election was decided correctly. My point, and this was a tangential thing anyway, was that it was at least understandable why people would feel that way. The law doesn’t support them but more people voted against him so at least there’s a logic to it. Trumps claim of winning in 2020 is based on nothing more than his desire to remain in office, even his henchman Barr said there was nothing to support that.
