R.E.M: They were the band that got me into music in the first place, and their influence is still felt now. Even earlier on, huge bands like Nirvana and Radiohead saw them as a strong influence, so in many ways R.E.M shaped a lot of alternative rock.
They were big for a time (biggest band on the planet at one stage), but their influence - I feel - goes underated.
