Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the kennebec and it’s tributary’s also a sea run salmon River? At least up to a certain point? I’m no where near an expert on Maine fisheries.

Reply to 🔥 TIL loons can't walk very well. by WWACrowleyD
It’s a not very fun fact tbh. Loons sometimes mistake parking lots for lakes. They than land and can’t take back off because they need a running (swimming) start. Another thing is if you see loons fishing near where your fishing don’t keep fishing, wait for them to go by, they’re going to scare the fish off anyways and you don’t want to catch a 10 lb pissed off bird.

Reply to In Maine, four theaters are known to offer open captions (on-screen subtitles). by tunicsandleggimgs15
CC and audio description devices are an ADA requirement for theaters since 2017, yeah it sucks that the words aren’t on the screen but you’ll still have them on the little reflector. As technology and awareness increases I’m sure more theaters will have them with the special glasses.

Reply to comment by LockAggressive5516 in PSA:In snowy conditions, expect people to drive slower. by BadLuckShoesie
It’s common in cars and trucks with rear wheel drive, gravity means the tires are working harder to stay in contact with the road, hills tend to ice up from the water running down them and all your power pushing instead of pulling means that if the tires lose control your basically a pendulum. It’s why you will sometimes see the DOT plow trucks reverse up hills, but that’s more common in very rural areas.

My barber charges about the same amount and I always thought they were undercharging me but when I go to pay them using their square they always skip the tip screen and won’t let me tip them. I’ve always wondered how barbers are able to stay in business when they seem to charge so little for their time.

These storms will be more common as time goes on, wether out system will be upgraded to handle these storms or not is unlikely. Generator food heater and water are the things you need. Maybe a bunch of blankets could help but not very necessary. Stabil for your generators gas could also be helpful, if it sits over the summer it could be possibly be too gummed up next time you need. If you have a wood stove and you never use it I’d suggest cleaning it out and keeping at least a little wood for emergencies.

And somewhere down that wire from the pole, probably at the end of your road or an intersection, there’s a large metal box with internet equipment.

There’s more equipment from the internet company that also requires power outside of your house. I believe they can be outside your power connections circuit so the equipment can lose or have power while your house has the other.

Sea water generally is worse. There’s more of it and it will get everywhere, road salt usually just gets in the wheel well, frame and the body.

Another option is to take a bottle that stands nicely upside down like a Gatorade bottle and half fill it, let it freeze and than flip it upside down. The coin method works but the part that the coin is on might not melt first.

Reply to What's in Northern Maine? by ThiefInTheNight2
Maine will be very very different than California. Northern Maine (most people consider this around Bangor or Katahdin north) is very sparse and mostly hills and potato’s. Not much to do. I think you would enjoy western Maine though. Most of Maines skiing is in this region, we get just about as much snow as the county and have mountains for days. It’s still pretty remote but we do have a few towns like Farmington and Rumford. I would highly suggest the former over the latter. Farmington has a university which I’m assuming you might be interested in. An expensive option would be a place like rangeley or carrabasset valley area or king field. they’re further north than the two I mentioned earlier, groceries can mean an hour drive, bad cell reception and sometimes more costly to no apartments but they will get you even closer to the mountains. Any other questions feel free to ask!

Reply to Hancock County planes 11/29 by shannon_nonnahs
Right now the winds across the Atlantic are blowing over Maine. Generally planes like to go with the wind so they can go faster and be more fuel efficient. Everyday ATC in Scotland decides which routes are best for that particular day. Recently they have been reentering US airspace above Maine so we see more planes along with atmospheric conditions being just right to make the contrails. This plus increased travel around the holidays. If you want to learn more there is a Wikipedia page on North Atlantic Tracks. If you want to see the routes the planes are taking you can go onto a website called flight aware, click on World Hi, this will show you all the “roads” the planes take. Next hit layers and go to the nav page and enable North Atlantic Tracks east and west to see the routes the planes will take. You can also download a flight tracker app and you will see a bunch of planes basically all in a row following these routes.

Wolfes neck state park in Freeport has a family of ospreys on the little island. The Belgrade lakes region, specifically the two most northern ponds north pond and east pond, has lots of eagle activity.

Pretty much all for profit nursing homes are bad and the woodlands company is no exception. I don’t know specifically about that location but a lot of the locations were chronically understaffed even before covid. I can’t remember the correct term but they are not skilled nursing, so most of the workers are just CNAs which is fine but a lot of the patients in those homes are much higher needs because they are some of the only dementia care homes in the state. I would suggest reading reviews to get a bigger picture. Also be aware that because of HIPPA it can be hard to find information on healthcare facilities treatment of patients so do be aware that some some things may just be rumors/not the whole story. If you can try and visit your aunt as much as you can that way you can keep an eye on how things are going.

I’ve never like southern hospitality. It all feels fake and disingenuous to me, especially compared to hospitality around here. Up here if someone is being nice you know most of the time that they are genuinely being nice and not just because it’s what’s expected.
