There's just a lot more stuff out now, all the time. It's not curated except by algorithms for the most part, so trendy shit is pushed to the top even if it sounds like shit. Also, think about this: who are the people who define themselves by what music they listen to? Pretty much teenagers. So they're the trend setters as far as internet popular music.
There's tons of great music out there, new or old, it's just not popular and generally harder to find.

Makes sense, instead that bs about questioning science because it's ever evolving and the hypotheses need to be tested and refined.
