Reply to Interesting essay on Steven Soderbergh’s SOLARIS, which is now 20 years old. by Bullingdon1973
I really loved this movie. The vibe, atmosphere and slow pacing really resonated with me for some reason. And the actors really sold their roles.
The only thing I didn’t understand was the thought process behind the company’s decision to send George Clooney’s character to their space station.
“We’ve lost contact with Solaris”
“Let’s send an armed security team to assess”
“Oh no we’ve lost contact with them too. Now what?”
“Uh, we send, uh … a … psychiatrist? … by himself.”
“Brilliant!”

No, because we never figured out who IS the boss.
Is it Angela because she agreed to hire Tony, pay his salary, board him and his daughter, had the power to fire and evict him at any point … you know what, never mind. Angela’s very clearly the boss. Question answered. Now let’s move on to Growing Pains.

This is not one of those movies. The military refused to cooperate once they read the script.
In fact, most of the real submarine shots you see were from the film crew spending weeks close to a naval base in the hopes of seeing a sub so they could capture that footage.
