Just chiming in to say that I bought my first house in my 20s and it was a great decision- I bought in South Baltimore, which was cheaper than it is now but I don't think it would necessarily be a mistake to buy instead of rent. I would wait and see where you will teaching though if you can- it's so, so nice to live relatively close to work- so if you get a job in Northeast Baltimore it would stink to have bought something in Hollins Market for example. Once you know where your job will be it will be easier to find a good neighborhood fit.

It is more complicated than other places, but certainly doable. There are lots of good elementary schools, middle can be a little tougher and then some great choices again for high school- in general kids apply to high schools and can go wherever they get in, there isn't really zoning for high school. A couple others not mentioned yet- Hampstead Hill (Canton), Francis Scott Key (locust point), Thomas Johnson (south baltimore), Midtown and Mt Royal (Bolton Hill). It's also often possible to get your kid in a school out of zone if there is room. No guarantees but I know plenty of people who have had success.

I had an easy trip on megabus a month or so ago. Freedom car will do a nyc run, but I am sure it is pricey.

Yes, ours has been that high this winter- insulation plays a big part- we have old windows and lose a lot of heat that way. I think prices are just higher this winter too with inflation.

I agree there should have been more communication - BGE did a heroic job getting most people restored pretty quickly and I know they couldn’t get out of area crews like they normally would. But we are still out and it would have been nice to know it would take this long- they were in our neighborhood Saturday and kept giving us times and then pushing them back. We stayed in the house that night and it was horrible. We’ve left, but still no real communication on when to expect it fixed. And the city/state should have been more proactive about getting people to emergency shelters- we are healthy, have high end sleeping bags and a fireplace- and somewhere to go when it is became clear it would be another night.

No power still in our neighborhood-north baltimore. We spent the night somewhere else but worried about pipes/radiators. No crew assigned yet :(. The outage map still showing a lot of outages/ feel sorry for the crews who were definitely out in the cold last night, and will have to work through the next few days….

Just took it this weekend, plenty of parking- as others have said, park in the west lot (it is marked) and print out the pass. Easy. Bus was easy too, full but ran more or less on time and smooth trip overall.

cinghiale? Any Italian place will definitely be able to do plain pasta even if it is not on the menu. My kids love Petit Louis. I think Sotto Sopra would work too.

yeah, rent is $$$ everywhere- but commuting can be a big cost too- especially from Dundalk or other parts of East Baltimore- you would have to go through the tunnel ($) or drive through town which could take forever. You could look in western baltimore county- arbutus/catonsville not sure it would be much cheaper though-

If you will be working in Columbia I would probably just live there, commuting from Baltimore will be a big pain. Certainly Dundalk makes no sense at all. Although not exactly bustling there are some urban amenities and plenty of housing choices. You will be close to baltimore and dc for weekend fun stuff.

I really love City Pets in Federal Hill- we moved out of downtown and I tried a few other places (Mt. Washington and Belvedere) but ended up going back to City Pets- I don't know that they are cheaper necessarily but definitely always seem conscious of cost- they give the price before doing things and don't push or make you feel bad if you want to skip or wait on expensive things. https://www.citypetsvet.com
