Is there any reason whatsoever for her to remain abroad instead of returning home to her family while she receives treatment?

That's awful, I hope they get squared away without losing anything and that they have a surprisingly good recovery.

Yeah I think you're confused, she's obviously got at least access to emergency treatment where she is but a collection of gunshot wounds requires intensive ongoing care. There's a world of difference between wanting to return to the US for such significant care and her bleeding and completely without care waiting for a flight. If she didn't have the immediate care you're talking about she would have died of blood loss by the time the story came out, or else it wouldn't be such a catastrophic medical situation.
