Same reason you see people on here equate the USSR and Russia: revisionist history (revisionist lies that the current Russian regime supports) and ignorance of the internal workings of the USSR. For instance, the majority of time the USSR existed it was under non-Russian leadership and many of its heroes were similarly diverse.

How does that alter anything? It is an attempt to use nationalism to rally support. The full response does present answers to the investigation but I don't know if those answers are legitimate or adequate. But I do immediately question the credibility of anyone that uses nationalism to attempt to deflect criticism.

There was a bit more to it than that. Yeltstin was seen as a Western puppet who was weakening Russia so people turned to the strong man who promised to strengthen Russia as this countered Yeltsin's perceived weakness which allowed for the far left and right to be threats.
