Yes this is actually what I think happened - they needed more high quality training data and humans were the way to achieve it until the ocr was good enough.

I used an expense App that claimed to use AI for its smart scanning and OCR but I always suspected it was using real people as often it would take hours or a day to ‘process’ the scan - and each time it would be a very different length of time for what were very similar scans.

It’s ok because the saudis funded Elon to buy Twitter so they can get their own back.

But isn’t this just advertising - advertising is paying people to say good things. What they need to do is mark them as ‘ads’

The bell curve is a perfectly good working model for a normal distribution but the evil comes when you decide what the variables are and then apply that curve to your population in order to get the result you want.

The real problem - and I’ve experienced this in a previous job - that they get rid of a lot of people but the workload doesn’t go down so those who are left are forced to do more for the same pay. You get stressed and overworked but they expect you to be grateful. I felt somehow unlucky that they didn’t get rid of me - I’d rather have gotten the package to leave, taken a month or two off and gotten another job.

You’ve made me think - the index might be based on a set of assumptions or metrics that some countries can’t or really just are different enough not to ever really match properly.
