I think the dumbest part is that they saw "favourite artist" and assumed that meant the person didn't appreciate any of the other artists they liked.

First of all, they said "favourite ARTIST," not "only artist I like," which means it doesn't rule out the others you named from being elsewhere on the list. Man.
It's sad that you know all these great musicians but you're still unable to grasp this simple concept: no need to be such a snob to others who appreciate different musicians.
