Much like Blair Witch Project, the filmmakers attempted to maintain the documentary façade. The director instructed the cast of unknowns to avoid press. Italian authorities suspected that there was actual foul play involved in the making of the film and investigated.
The slasher genre was still relatively new, and few movies up to this point were filmed with as much "realism" as this one.

I'm merely mocking the entertainment media that's effectively been predicting the death of Marvel and DC movies for about ten years now...
With that said, I think you know damned well what genre "comic book movies" tends to describe. No one is thinking American Slendor or Ghost World, regardless of their sources.
