If you look at the topographic map you'll see that Bahkmut is in the low ground, theres defensive positions behind Bahkmut that at 100m+ higher. If Russia finally manages to take Bahkmut they'll get shot to shit from those positions anyway and then it's an uphill battle trying to push out of the town.
