Reply to TIL that traditional lacquer is made w urushiol sap, aka the rash-causing toxin in poison ivy & poison oak. In fact, "urushi" (as in "urushi-ol") is the Japanese for the Chinese lacquer tree (also toxic) & an English word for lacquerware. They all fall in the genus Toxicodendron, or "poison tree". by thedamnoftinkers

Reply to TIL that the Gävle Yule Goat (of Gävle, Sweden) isn't meant to be burned down, even if the burning has become a tradition of sorts. by panzerfan
It has to burn. or else bad fortune will strike the world. It didn't burn in 2017,2018,2019, 2020. And look where that got us.
But the moment it was burned in 2021, Covid just disappeared.
It still stands this year, so be prepared for another year of misery.

Reply to comment by SkidsAndSmoke in TIL Snow is an excellent insulator because it consists of about 90–95 percent trapped air (fresh). This is the reason why igloos are warmer inside than outside, and why some animals in colder regions build snow caves to spend the winter while hibernating. by SunCloud-777
I've never heard of that.
But it does make sense.
I'm actually going to have to look into that.
Thanks!

And why we shovel snow against our houses.

I never got far enough into that series to actually find out what it was about. it was just so boring and drab.

Rap can be traced back to rhyming songs from the pre-christian era.
Hip Hop on the other hand was born in the late 70s.-

Reply to TIL Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone is widely credited with introducing percussive playing on the electric bass in the 1969 song Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again). He stated that he developed bass slapping in an earlier band in order to compensate for that band's lack of a drummer. by trifletruffles
Larry Graham is also a professional grade shit-talker and has given several different version of his "discovery" of slap-bass.
HOWEVER: It is fairly certain that he was the one that really did introduce the slap and pop technique. He might not have been the first to slap a bass string, but that unique 'slap-and-pop' is most likely his creation.
AND, He is incredible good at it.
His old instruction video is still a goldmine.
