Saw it again a few weeks ago. The CGI took me out of a few scenes. He was great before he lost his marbles though. The version of Hughes after he loses it felt like a caricature. It was ballsy to do but I think he was probably too young to pull it off. Today’s Leo could make it work better.
You mentioned movies where he wasn’t specifically lauded or nominated. Now do it again with that criteria in place…
Just about the only thing about him that isn’t believable is “toughness” if that makes sense. Revenant was an outlier and more about surviving but in Departed I didn’t think he was tough (perhaps his character wasn’t meant to be) the way Damon was or even Sheen. And in Gangs of New York he didn’t sell me on it either. And in Great Gatsby when he loses it on Tom Buchanan it came across as bratty instead of aggressive or tough.
Leo just doesn’t come across as a guy who’s ever thrown a punch. Which doesn’t mean he isn’t a great actor, just that it makes a few roles feel less genuine.

Leo doesn’t do “tough” well at all.
