So, this might just be me and others misunderstanding AI as something like AGI?

True. I guess this is the best answer.

ChatGPT might meet the broad and marketed umbrella term of "AI", but that doesn't mean it is "intelligent" enough for some people's meaning of the word.
Regardless if it is or isn't, I am excited to see where this technology takes us!

Calculators can most certainly predict complex patterns through the formulas its fed.

We had to calculate with machinery at the time for the complex patterns to even get to the moon. And that wasn't AI as far as I am told.

I am not saying chatGPT isn't complex, but so far that doesn't necessarily mean it is intelligent. But then I am told it is maybe at least a "weak" AI for being able to react and produce language well, but then get told it is just assigning predictability/a number to do so from the data it is fed.

So, if it is complexity that determines if it is an AI, what is the threshold for it being complex enough?

Is it intelligence to accurately predict something? I have been told it's not, it is, and maybe.

A calculator can predict numbers accurately for math problems, but many wouldn't say that is an AI.

That's why I set this discussion up to see what people have to say and think on the topic.

I did look up the meaning at different places and I get varied results. IBM makes it sound like this is a "weak" AI, but then I get responses to me claiming it such as wrong.

While others say if it just passes the Turing test. While others say predictive algorithms aren't really intelligent and don't constitute an AI.

I guess it comes down to what is the "intelligence part" and if predictive algorithms fit into that. What is the threshold.

So, I figured I get a consensus on what people think if it is.

Hopefully there isn't a mod takeover, or this sub becomes a diluted and more politically driven like r/Futurology as it gains more popularity.

Can we get some reassurance from the mods that they plan not to let this happen?

I actually like the more nuanced, if not always perfect, discussions I read and have on here.

Don’t get me wrong, the corporations gaining control of open source, or allegedly open source, resources and services is bad.

I was more talking about how a bunch of money and people are throwing around a lot more interest in AI related things. Exciting to see what developments come from it.

Oh boy. The AI wars have begun.

Or technically have been for a while. Exciting to see the investments start flying.

Typically the freedom of the press is very important and necessary for a freer society.

However, when faced with a literal war and a disinformation campaign by your enemies, it’s a tight rope to walk.

Not surprised more aggressive measures are being taken. The main hope is it will be walked back and relaxed when Ukraine finally kicks Russia’s butt out of their country.

And like the artists of old, many are going to be out of a job due to automation. With AI art this time.

At this point, we really need to consider or work out how to do Universal Basic Income. Automation has already gotten rid of too many jobs for the average person.

With AI and automation burning through more and more, what can realistically be left that will employee most people? Sure, some can work in more advanced physical labor or work on programming, but that can only employ or last so long.

What happens then? When will it hit this point of no return?
