Local lenders will have a real person you will deal with and call if anything goes wrong. I suggest you take a first time homebuyers class. They are cheap and held regularly. They will go over what mortgage terminology means and the stages the process goes through. I would talk with a minimum of three different lenders and compare their offers.

Arlington is the 5th safest in the country and the third safest in MA. Schools are highly rated. But houses are also in demand, granted not as in demand as before.

Interesting, but I don't think the garage has the extra support available to support a whole building on top of it. And the lives of the people who live in the garage would also depend on the upkeep of the garage which has been questionable.

Your contractor says they don't want to do your house. That is crazy expensive. Always get there quotes when doing work like this.
