I love Damon's first three movies but the fourth, 'Jason Bourne', is a real stinker.

Not a fan of Greengrass's overly excessive use of shakey cam but I endure it.

Love it, one of my favorites. My only gripe is with the character of 'Drew' - he's such a badly written, very shallow 'bad guy'. Poorly acted too. Other than that I have no complaints about the movie.

I manage to separate the art from the artist, in other words I'm more than happy to watch Spacey's movies such as the excellent L.A. Confidential, K-Pax, Seven, etc. He was a great actor and there were a lot of other people involved in the making of those movies besides Spacey, should people stop watching them just because of him?

You also have to ask yourself where you draw the line. How many movies should we avoid watching because one person involved in the production has done something illegal?

Look at Die Hard - director John McTiernan has served prison time for lying to an FBI investigator and perjury (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McTiernan#Criminal_charges,_felony_conviction,_and_incarceration), in which case should we all stop watching Die Hard and his other movies? Of course not.

Murder by Decree - 1979, starring Christopher Plummer and James Mason as Holmes and Watson - very well written and nicely atmospheric.

Also, not a movie but speaking of Sherlock Holmes, have you seen the British Sherlock Holmes TV series which was broadcast from the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s? Jeremy Brett stars as Holmes. Very highly recommended, particularly the first two seasons. Here's a list of the series and episodes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sherlock_Holmes_episodes

My impression from reading assorted threads and articles on the matter over the past few years is that, if anything, practical effects are being used even more - you just don't notice them because they are so good and, if required, a bit of CGI is used as an assist.

I watch Netflix, Amazon, etc on my PC with a pair of good quality stereo headphones which I've had for years.

'Old' shows are fine (I'm thinking anything prior to around 2005 - 2010), no problems at all with the audio, I can make out everything that the characters say, the mixing is good, etc. However, everything after that is a variable mess and I often need to rewind and briefly turn on the subtitles to hear some dialog that I couldn't make out. This applies to movies as well.

It's only worth it if you have a suitable TV and audio system (and that should include taking into account the TV size and viewing distance). If you don't then stick to normal HD Blu-ray.

Just to point out to those unaware - Nic Pizzolatto (the main writer of seasons 1, 2 and 3) isn't involved with season 4 (he's only credited as an exec producer). This may or may not be a good thing.

Hollywood prefers him in villain roles I guess? It's worth seeing him in some of his non-Hollywood roles, off the top of my head here's some where he's not playing the villain:

Arctic
The Hunt
Another Round
A Royal Affair

If you're in the mood for some more anime movies I'd also very highly recommend the movie A Silent Voice - it's darker in tone than Your Name (different writer/director too) and deals with disability, bullying, abuse and suicide. It's not all doom and gloom though, it's often uplifting too.

If you're in the US it's available on Netflix and various other services in other countries:

Another highly regarded movie by the same writer/director as Your Name is The Garden of Words.

Also check out movies by Hayao Miyazaki such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle and others - in most countries they are available on Netflix but in the US are to be found on HBO Max instead.

I could recommend many more from different writers and directors ......

How about a festive movie:

Klaus (2019) - on Netflix (it's one of the best animated Christmas movies to come out in the past few years).

Common Sense Media rate it a 6+

https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/klaus

(scroll down to see the section 'what parents need to know' for details on the movie and maybe decide based on that)

and on IMDb many countries have it as 7 or 7+
