"Why the hell didn't you tell me this is what would happen?"

"Calm down. I'd tell you to breathe, but neither of us need to."

"You don't know what it is like? I was just so hungry, and-" The 'Friendly Neighborhood Dracula' exclaimed.

"There is a reason why I didn't want you to go out and hunt. There are plenty of people who would prefer to be a walking blood bag as long as you don't drink them dry. It is a very, very weird subculture but somebody got impatient." I snapped while staring at the frantic little vampire. "You had plenty to drink when you were with the others, why did you come to Detroit? And also, how?"

The vampire paused and looked back at me. I would've said he went paler, but...

"What. Did. You. Do?" I snarl as I stride towards him.

"Cruise ship. Slipped on-board and I did get thirsty, but the woman I drank was going to poison her husband on the ship and sue the company. She lasted me the trip." The vampire explained meekly.

Grabbing him by his shirt, I hoisted him up in the air with one arm showing off how little effort it takes for me to accomplish that feat.

"Name of your victim. If I find proof that you were wrong." I can feel him shudder in fear. i am very grateful vampires do not need to urinate as I am positive there would've been a puddle of liquid fear.

"Karla Gregson. Email and internet search history have the proof, she even used her husband's credit card and forged the suicide note." My handler answered immediately.

As I tried to figure out how they got the information that fast, they continued. "The Day shift handler got a parcel from one of your network contacts. The contact checked the contents of the envelope, figured that you would need this and sent it to one of your day shift handlers. They made copies for the other handlers as we didn't know when Morbius would get caught."

I lowered the vampire down gently and let go.

"It felt good, protecting an innocent person. As Vampires we don't normally get that opportunity, especially when you have us in a secure facility, and we are grateful you stepped in when you did, but it has been centuries. As an Immortal, you would understand the need to travel and speak with a non-immortal from time to time."

"My network was there to facilitate that. What is this about?" I ask, my curiosity replacing my fury.

"I got into some of those manga and comic books and were told you were starting to make moves to let the world know you exist, and I thought maybe we could too."

"Like that vampire TV show, with the synthetic blood?"

"Yeah, exactly."

"And when those religious zealots and inquisitors discover that you don't have as many weaknesses because you are all over a century old, what would they do then? When they find out that crosses don't work, same with holy ground, and thresholds were imposed by Mother, what do you think they would do...? I was planning on bringing you with me, once I had established credibility with society at large, and didn't have to fend of governments because of what my blood is capable of. Ogres, therianthropes, and all the other supernatural creatures that could fit in safely into a city I guided and protected, that was part of my plan. And you..."

The not so confident Morbius shifted his foot back during my tirade. I am one of the few beings that could easily go toe to toe with any of the surviving vampires with disturbing ease, and I was getting worked up that I missed it.

"You wanted to be a hero, well anti-hero. Protect the citizens while eliminating the threats against them, often with violent or lethal methods."

He nodded sheepishly.

"Dougal McNally. I am sorry for getting worked up. It is just there are so many things to keep track of, that I struggle with it and I don't need to sleep and use that time to catch up on everything else. There are so many..."

I sigh deeply. "You only wanted to help, and I assume my handlers are guiding you to targets?"

Dougal nodded sheepishly.

"Fine, we can find you a base of operations in Detroit and the handlers will feed you intel. As long as it is just-"

"One of the lycan therians are here too." Dougal whimpered. "Last year, three of his tribe were killed and skinned. He tracked the thing to Detroit."

"Thing? What thing?" I ask softly.

"Yautja."

I wasn't referring to the cons of the tricks the team used, but some of their villains or stories were taken from the headlines. One of the showrunners had a blog about it

You should look into Leverage. There was an episode in Season 1 where the team are in a plane that is crashing due to a virus loaded in via the black box. One of the family of the execs enjoyed the show but pointed out that the plane shown doesn't make the flight. Nothing about the virus not working in that way.

Some of the villains in that show, based on real-world events are actually harrowing.

"How do you get from one place to the other so quickly?"

An annoying question to hear while enjoying my coffee, but it is one I do get fairly often. Luckily AI am at home, so I don't have to worry about people being concerned about the 'crazy man talking as if magic is real'.

"Magic. When Mother was raiding me, she understood that because I was a child of hers, I would have innate magical capabilities. She also understood that it would irrevocably affect the world, so she got Melin to teach me about magic and to find a way for me to use it without severely affecting others." I explain, my mind drifting back to those simpler times over a thousand years ago.

"Hang on. I thought you just used a teleportation device." My troubleshooter asked, her voice in my ear.

"In a manner of speaking, I do. Magic comes from a level of understanding that humans are not capable of, in their current state. When I need to travel a vast distance quickly, I go through a door, or portal, as I view them. For me, portals are openings through which you travel from one place to another. You go through the door in the hallway and enter the door of the kitchen. I view those doors as portals and am able to connect with every door on the planet. Makes travelling around highly efficient."

"Sounds incredible, but why can't we do that? Us humans." The inevitable follow-up question.

"Here's the thing. Magic is real, it is not like the magic seen in movies, TV shows or books. Magic helps people shape their perception of reality. When you answer the question "How do you describe your ideal partner?" that question alters how view the world. You will be more attracted to a person that fits those ideals. Even if there would be a better match with someone who doesn't fit those physical characteristics. You shape how you see the world. Magic is just that principle, understood on a fundamental level that humans are not ready for. Because I deeply understand that Magic is real, and how it affects the world, I am able to tap into that."

"But why can't we do that?"

"Fear and doubt. If human was to ever get over their xenophobia, racism, sexism, religion. Any mentality that divides 'us and them' makes it hard to for humanity to tap into magic, because of the fears and doubts that are paired with those negative traits. And as horrible as it sounds. I am glad of this fact. Consider the world as it is now, and throw magic into that maelstrom. Racists who can wield magic, homophobes who can use magic. False believers in gods who can use magic. Politicians with magic." I pause as I physically shudder at that horrifying thought.

"But because of your fears and doubts, you cannot wield magic. Which is not a bad thing. When I send my people into warzones to evacuate civilians, they are able to navigate the portal labyrinth. And as long as they focus on their task, they will not get lost. Imagine what it would be like navigating a labyrinth of doors, then discovering you are lost."

"Maybe us using magic is not such a great idea." My troubleshooter notes quietly.

Some. Yes. Not all. And the best way to hide secrets is to make the secrets you want them to find out about difficult, but not impossible to get into. Why would you hide anymore after that?

Yes, that was the public perception of the event. However, Fury did have a hidden 'toolbox' he gave to Coulson which had a plethora of secrets, not mention secret bases that even SHIELD were not aware of.

"Actually, if you can let me out at 5, that would be great." I say softly, the stares from the other men make me feel uncomfortable. I feel like I am in a disciplinary meeting with some people with exceptional anger control issues, and the desire to leave is almost overwhelming.

My phone rings, and I can hear someone curse at me while I answer my phone.

"I am sorry that I am late, I am in the elevator." I answer as I step back, bumping into the other guy with a briefcase. I try to ignore the heavy thunk noise as I try to make my way to the front of the car.

"You should've known you were going to be late and planned accordingly." The person on the end of the line snaps.

"Hey, I didn't know about the goddamn traffic holdup! It's not like I had a magic 8-ball that would've told me, there will be a twenty car pile-up on the freeway." I yell back, waving my arm for emphasis. My fist connecting with the jaw of the guy with the no longer secret magnetic cuff for Cap, knocking him out.

"You are the one that called the meeting, and even when I told you I would be late, you still demanded that I somehow bend Time and Space to make it to the Triskelion. You have no right to make demands of me when I have to obey the laws of this planet." I continue to rant as I ram bodily into Stilwell who stumbles into the goon he has in front of.

Cap takes advantage of the situation and swiftly defeats the others. He looks at me, his body tense, but his face shows confusion.

"You have other places to be, Steve." I say, smashing the reinforced window. "Not here being the top priority. Go."

He nods and hurls himself out of the window, his shield taking the hit first.

"I need to get to my meeting to speak with Fury."
