Haven't read King for years, mostly because I had the feeling "skip the first 30% and then it gets interesting". I liked his Bachmann books though - they were more condensed and manageable. But then that's 25 years ago and I will probably try some of his newer books - heard a lot of praises.

Germany is a liberal country. We had the mayor of Berlin proclaiming "I'm gay and that's good". Was that yesterday? No, 20 years ago. Can you marry? Yes. It's really not an issue here if you're gay, lesbian, transgender or identify as a garden dwarf. Noone cares.

It's tip-toeing around everything that's related to that episode of history.
