Definitely Crimson Tide
Perfectly paced, pretty close to peak Denzel and Gene Hackman, score by Hans Zimmer, Tony Scott directed with contributions from a number of legends (like Tarantino). Great supporting cast with Viggo Mortensen and Gandolfini. Probably my favorite movie set at sea.
Love making lists by year and 95 is one of the strongest.

If you’re interested in reading on this, I’d recommend “The Big Picture” which is a book that follows Sony studios from the late 90’s to mid 2010’s. Touches on exactly what your post is about.

I’d also check out the other John Carpenter horror movies like They Live, The Fog and Christine - his horror movies (including The Thing and Halloween) are my favorite!
