You're so close OP! Can't wait to see what days six and seven bring you. Just be cautious, okay?

Might be time to wipe your hard drive and reinstall everything if you can. Normally I wouldn't be concerned about a Sims mod infecting other software, but this is definitely a "better safe than sorry" scenario!

I'm also from Appalachia, OP (the NC part if it matters). My grandmother always stressed NEVER looking outside at night. I wonder if looking outside was the last thing that sealed Cassie's fate, or if it was already too late.
Hopefully there won't be a "next time," but if there is, consider burying a jar of iron nails at the property boundary. That will keep some haints at bay, or at least buy you time.

OP, I'm from the NC part of Appalachia and one thing my granny taught me was to never, ever look at anything outside at night. And if you do by mistake, don't meet their eyes! It seems to me you invited trouble on you, as sorry as I am to say it. Your best bet now is to bury mason jars full of iron nails at the edge of your property to keep the haints out.
