there are two collections of short stories by ted chiang. in one of them is the story that was turned into the film “arrival”. either are absolutely fantastic.

people love to criticise holden caulfield, but not only do i love that book, i feel very similarly about the world. like many of the kids who went to seek salinger out thinking he had some sort of secret understanding of pain and sadness, i found it enormously comforting.

sadly, the unconsoled by kazuo ishiguro has killed my reading habits stone dead. they’ve been in their death throes for a while, though. made it a quarter of the way in. it’s not a bad book. i just didn’t care. before that, a clockwork orange kept them on life support for a bit.
