I've never personally lived there, but I had friends who did and I was constantly over there so I spent a lot of time there, day and night. My advice is from 6-7 years ago and the area has been getting nicer recently so do keep that in mind. As long as you keep to yourself, you should be fine. You'll probably experience some sketchy stuff but if you don't get involved it shouldn't be a problem. There are drunks/crackheads in the area that will occasionally cause a scene. I would hear the occasional gunshot, and there were shots fired on the basketball court in the park directly across from Clark in the middle of the day once. I don't think anyone was hit though. But I never personally had any issues. There is some gang activity in the surrounding area but as long as you aren't involved you really shouldn't have any problems. Basically, if you're a normal college student who has common sense and doesn't go looking for trouble you might see some weird shit but you shouldn't personally have any problems.

The whole show is great, but the 1st episode is a master class in scriptwriting. I loved the dynamic of the bad guys knowing she is a human lie detector and carefully wording their answers so they weren't technically lying, but still sounding like a fairly natural conversation. Adrian Brody was especially amazing. And Natasha Lyonne is fantastic in every episode. It takes an old concept and just executes it perfectly. One of my favorite new shows in recent memory.

It's actually very interesting how much Sci-fi television and film has impacted the average person's mental image of what Mars and other planets look like. Most of the actual images of the surface of Mars that we have are very flat and boring. Many people view this landscape as alien because landscapes like this are often used to portray other planets on television and film, not the other way around. Earth is 1000x more interesting than anything we've ever found in space. Alien landscapes in Sci-fi are often based off of Earth more than they are any other planet. It just reminds you to love a cherish what we have here and not look too much to the stars. Earth is amazing.
