Reply to Starry's Bankruptcy by unresolved_m
If you live in a condo/apartment building you should get building admins to contact netblazr. They operate similar to starry, peer to peer mesh network. My building has both netblazr and starry and now with the bankruptcy the people using starry are moving to netblazr.

a lot of these ISPs were looking to surge their user bases and then sell out to the major providers. When you don't get bought out, you run out of capital to grow so aggressively. If they can maintain their customer base and revenue, then there is lot room for keeping the business.

there are different types of bankruptcy. Chapter 11 is a restructuring of debt but not necessarily going out of business. Chapter 7 is a liquidation process and relief from debt, most commonly known as going out of business for real.

I put down 3.5% with a FHA. refinanced 3 years later to remove PMI. 10 years I am now around 60% equity on it. I can't afford to move anywhere else in Mass, but hey can't win them all.

Reply to comment by Unfiltered_Rabbit in FREE DENTAL CLEANINGS by Marlenne_A
The 'patient' in this case is a learning tool. It's not a regular cleaning appointment. You get nearly free dental procedures, they get you in chair for 15 to 20 hours over the course of a couple months. That's the trade. That's why you have never experienced anything like this before. If you have dental insurance then this really isn't "worth it", unless you want to help dental assistants. If you have no insurance, then this is a great deal, provided you have the time.
Just like if you can afford to rent a jet ski, sitting in a 2 hr time share pitch for a jet ski rental isn't worth it.

Well, your blending a couple different arguments here. I'm no Amazon apologist, but Amazon isn't bad for the consumer. bad for their employees I would say, bad for the environment, bad for people as a society, maybe, but not bad for the "consumer". I can get paper towels delivered to my house for cheaper than I could get at the mom and pop. In the pure context of a consumer, how am I worse off?

Competition is not good for business owners, it good for consumers. They campaign heavily against this and for the expansion of liqour licenses. Competing against other businesses to see who can sell the cheapest drinks is not in their best interest. Having longer business hours just means more payroll. More liqour licenses is just more competition. Every business wants to create barriers of entry for competition and then milk the captive audience. Be it a bar, restaurant, liqour store etc etc.

Reply to Let's say I've got a tuxedo burning a hole in my pocket.. what's a worthwhile Black Tie event this winter in Boston? by THKMass
Just wear it out wherever. My friends and I used to have a monthly tuxedo outing, and just go to random dive bars and restaurants. Black tie events typically are boring. Wearing a tuxedo to a dive bar, especially with a group of 10 people in tuxedos, is awesome. We always had fake back stories (charity events, book release party, canceled wedding etc). It was a great time. I got engaged one night because of the tuxedo. Never saw that lady again. Haha.

Reply to Thanksgiving questions from a foreigner by obcork
All depends on the time and money you want to put into it. If you want the best of the best, you have to order a turkey in advance and will need to start prepping the bird 1 to 3 days before. If you just need to get a turkey on the table that is edible, then you can get one at the grocery store week of (it will be frozen and will take 2 or so days to defrost in fridge). You can also buy pre-made everything if you want the least amount of time involved. I've cooked Thanksgiving from 2 people to 40. I've ordered high end heritage breeds and cooked standard grocery store frozen birds. Ask away if you have any specifc questions. Time and money are the items you need to figure first.

People just want the cheapest food they can get. The shopping experience and time to do so don't matter to them (as much).
