I was confused as well. Came to the comments looking for kindred spirits in the matter.

The weirdest shit happened to me when he died. I was 9 years old, and I went to school legitimately upset about his passing. My friends at the time asked me what was up, and I gave them the news.
Out of freaking left field, they started telling me I shouldn't be upset and shaming me because they had heard Schultz was "the anti-Christ" and that I was wrong to have liked him.
It was the most bizarre and traumatizing experience, and I've never figured out what the hell it was all about.

That kinda reminds me of that horror game that got popular on YouTube a while back. Basically you're driving around in the rain and a strange car starts following you and then trying to ruin you off the road. If you're car gets incapacitated the game ends.
I think it was like a big puzzle you had to solve, like to drive to the right places in the right order without letting him murder you.

Creating emissions is the most important bit, or else the whole thing just falls apart. Why even be a tree at that point?

If there is rain in the forecast, maybe he had some giant sugar cubes to bring in the house and didn't want them to dissolve.
