It was erected in 1992 to commemorate Hidalgo as the first American city to be invaded by an aggressive strain of African bees that resulted in public panic. If you thought Africanized Honey Bees were bad, wait until you hear about the giant Asian hornet, sometimes referred to as “the murder hornet.” These guys can grow up to 2 inches (2.5 cm) and can take out entire honeybee hive in a matter of hours.
