Definitely a practical joke. I once worked at a place where they held a guy’s chair hostage. Showed it tied to railroad tracks, demanded ransom, etc. the funniest part was how mad the chair owner was about it. Made it all worthwhile.

There’s been a bit of a bourbon boom. Lots of new distilleries popping up. Good bourbon is usually aged 5+ years. In order to get some revenue in interim, some will sell moonshine, rye, or straight whisky while the good stuff matures. Then they discontinue the cheap stuff.
