I was having dinner with a girlfriend, Anne, in the mid-1980s, and we started talking about the mutual friends we had. Anne asked if I'd ever heard of these gruesome murders back in Utah about 10 years ago, I said no and she told me that a couple we both knew were related to one of the families who lost loved ones in the crime and a book was written about the murders. This was long before the Internet and I can't recall how in the world I found a copy of the book when I didn't know the title, but I did--Victim by Gary Kinder, which has become one of my favorite true-crime books. There was an updated version after the execution of the killers. If my friend had never mentioned the crime or book to me, I never would have known.

Barbra has been my favorite singer since the 1970s, I had 21 of her albums (as LPs or CDs or cassettes), one of the best female vocalists of all time.

But for some reason I never could stand her as an actress. I'm not saying she wasn't any good, but I've just never liked her, except for What's Up, Doc? (1972), I adore that movie--just watched it again this weekend--despite the fact that it also stars Ryan O'Neal, another actor I dislike. And she never looked more beautiful (IMO) despite her very unconventional looks.

The above photo is taken from The Owl and the Pussycat (1970) with George Seagal, one of the highest-grossing films that year, but I never saw it and never want to.

Nothing that I can remember, but I remember seeing Saturday Night Fever (1977) in a small Spanish town in the spring of 1978, the little theater was packed, I had just turned 20 and was probably the oldest member of the audience; everyone else was like 12-17. I was surprised that so many teens were there, it was a very raunchy movie.

Saving Private Ryan has two memorable scenes, one leading into another.

Even though there's a voiceover, there's no dialogue where the women are typing condolence letters to families of deceased soldiers. You can tell what has happened with the Ryan family just by watching.

Then seeing Mrs. Ryan washing the dishes & noticing the big, black car making its way up the dirt road to her house--which could only mean one thing.
