I live in forest hills and genuinely love it here. It's definitely one of the safer and cleaner sections in Newark. I'm a single, female, I don't share my weight but I do feel very safe here. My neighbors keep to themselves but we occasionally head nod to one another. There is definitely a high rise in package thefts and car break ins but I am not afraid to walk around my neighborhood just more cautious with my mail.

First, no one is saying to stop enforcing vehicle safety standards. We just do not need cops enforcing non-violent scenarios when we can easily have cameras or drones in place to catch vehicle violations. I would even support reallocating police funds to traffic enforcement agencies so that they can expand and acquire the technology and support to do their jobs.
Second, we should limit the situations where we use cops since they have been proven time and time again that THEY ARE RACIST. They use traffic violations as a cover to act on racial profiling. Studies show that black or hispanics are more likely to be pulled over and that they are more likely to be ticketed than white drivers. Below are two links that show the data on this issue:

Kudos to you. I've seen your posts and you don't seem to be aggressive and violent. You're just keeping an eye out and alot of times that can prevent something worse from happening.

https://www.npr.org/2021/11/08/1052957246/why-philadelphia-has-banned-low-level-traffic-stops
Philadelphia has already implemented the Driving Equity Act, which should be nationwide.
Copied highlight from the article:
The new legislation bans stops for:
Driving with a single broken brake light
Driving with a single headlight
Having a registration plate that's not clearly displayed, fastened, or visible
Driving without an inspection or emissions sticker
Bumper issues
Minor obstructions (like something hanging from a rearview mirror)
Driving without vehicle registration within 60 days of the observed infraction
While these low-level offenses will no longer lead to interactions between police and drivers, such infractions will still result in a ticket that is either left on the driver's windshield or mailed.

Protesting doesn't change things overnight, but it does allow communities to get together to focus on what needs to change, brings awareness to issues that would usually be ignored, and is a strong reminder that the power lies in its people.
What we need to do is understand the root issues behind these racist acts and violent displays of force by the police. That's where demonstrations, protests, and rallies can help. They can provide communities with forums to educate them on what's happening and motivate them to fight back. Let's not underestimate the power of protests because they don't give us results instantly.
Also, we shouldn't have to join the police force for cops to be decent human beings. The police force isn't going to completely change solely because of new hires. It is layers and layers of problematic behaviors, inappropriate policies and training, and corrupted leadership that have created one of the most dangerous and abusive workforces that the country unfortunately has to rely on.
Definitely agree on the vote and run. Everyone should vote for. Every. Single. Election.

I have too many thoughts, but the ones that come to mind include: complete retraining and reevaluating current policies that are in place; we need to have better community outreach programs that can handle non-violent incidents; and the most important thing is holding cops accountable.
We really need to have a separate institution that holds police accountable for this shit. The biggest reason why this continues is because cops are not scared of repercussions. They have internal teams that investigate them but the public isnt privy to that information and bias/connections limit what punishmentis appropriate..

Reply to Friendly Neighborhood Midnight here; got this picture the other night on a perch during patrol. Is it me or has the north part of Newark been..TOO quiet? Either Citizens coverage of crime up here stopped or the 100 new officers are actually doing their jobs- by MDNTNWK
You should patrol during the day to catch the porch thieves. That's where the real action happens

I'd wouldn't recommend leaving the airport with only 2.5 hours to spare. The traffic at rush hour would eat up most of your time and going through security (with or without tsa pre-check) could take another half hour or more.

If you move to Newark I think you will be genuinely surprised by how much better it is compared to the reputation it has. Granted, it was one of the most dangerous cities for a while but it truly has had some major changes for the better. Good luck with your search!
