Darkness at Noon ARthur Koestler. Its an incredibly engaging novel that's based on the events of the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, Darkness at Noon tells the story of Nicolas Rubashov, a once-important figure in the Communist Party who is arrested and imprisoned for treason.
While not an exact history, it's very engaging and give you a glimpse of what Russia was like for those who were in power and lost it in the lat 1930's. A favorite read of mine. One of the few books I had to read in college that I truly enjoyed and have reread since.
