Yikes, I came back to this thread to see if anyone had more suggestions and had no idea about this at all because the instructor in question isn't one I've taken classes with though I remember seeing the name around - I'm reading up on it on Yelp, and especially Silvia's responses to some of the accounts, and it's disturbing. Thanks for mentioning this.

+1, Salsa with Silvia is delightful and offers classes in a range of styles and ability levels. I've been to both locations with a bunch of their instructors and never had one that wasn't fun, talented and welcoming to newbies. They also host monthly all-levels social dances that are probably a good socializing opportunity for a newcomer, though I've never been.
