The 8K is if you repair the engine and sell the car privately to someone at the upper end of KBB. It’s unlikely you will sell for that much, and almost certainly not as a trade in. If the rest of the car is in great shape you might get $6K, and slightly less from a trade in perspective.

The engine costing 4K isn’t that surprising; and there is some benefit to doing the repair and then trading in:

A) you get some tax savings on the new car you replace this one with B) you might be a few hundred dollars richer when all is said and done C) you can also continue to drive this car for at least a little while longer, as the new car market continues to cool, so you don’t have to overpay for the new one

There’s a lot of contingencies between being able to find the right replacement car, at a dealer that will also give you the right trade in value, so that will take some time.

This is better positioned for the Jersey City sub.

As someone that lives in Jersey City and loves it, let me open with two points:

A) your friends in Manhattan will rarely want to commute out to JC unless they live directly on the Path. If you have friends in NJ, the hosting bit will be helpful. If you’re expecting your NYC friends will come over with the same frequency, it’s possible, but I’d say unlikely.

B) I will never go back to voluntarily having roommates - i’ve never had problems with them, but I enjoy my own place far too much.

If you’re open to roommates you should consider digging around Manhattan as well, but your overall payment is pretty great for NYC.

Do what you gotta do.

Tesla chargers are suitable for use outdoors, and I'm sure the others are as well. The molding they've used here is a helpful add (that I'm sure protects their cable as well).

The ideal set up would be lockable outlets at street level past the sidewalk, but this is not the end of the world to me.

My lungs definitely prefer EVs to ICEs, so if this is a stepping stone to better charging infrastructure across the city, I'm for it.
