He suffers from bloat, he often writes himself into a corner, either through technological advancement (to the point that the good guys are not really threatened anymore) or being unable to progress the story because there's no real way to advance it.

There are specific viruses that insert their DNA directly into the host genome where it "goes along for the ride" with it's DNA being replicated along with the hosts until times get tough whereupon the virus takes over the cells machinery to make copies of itself.

However sometimes the inserted virus loses the ability to make full virus particles, and now it's stuck.

House was often.....questionable, cases where basic tests would have diagnosed the issues within a couple of days, such as a case of amoebic meningitis, with an altered mental state, so a lumbar puncture would have been one of the 1st things they did, and a lab would have spotted it.
