I’ve lived here my whole life and I feel like the deer flies are more of a June thing? Black flies are definitely May though. If you get a breezier day while here, that’s the day to explore the woods. Those little annoying things can’t fly in a breeze.

I know you said not to suggest other brands but I also have a daily backpack. I have had amazing luck with Deuter. Mine has a mesh back and a frame that actually keeps it off my back. I bought their kid carrier when I had little ones and it’s been passed down the family. Currently on its 5th kid and it still looks brand new.
