If you’re not comfortable with buses and metro, walking is a hell of a thing here. I recommend you set an exploration plan for yourself. If you love donuts, find the best donut place in each neighborhood and use getting there as practice and a way to see parts of the city along the way. Sometimes it’s overwhelming how much you can do here but it also means you’re not losing out because you can find whatever fits your fancy.

Take advantage of your student discount. Check out smaller, live music places that play genres you like. People are pretty friendly in those spaces.

Sounds like you have good relationships! Ask them if they know of any student or parents looking for a tutor in economics and/or Russian. And post electronically or in writing offering tutoring services at coffee shops on and off college campus and coffee shops near expensive high schools (ie get their parents).

I hate not being able to work at some of my fave coffee shops bc of that.

However, just like it’s their choice to have that policy and a designated space, it’s my choice to find somewhere that does allow laptops or wait out a spot. There’s a lot of great local spots that still allow that.

The downvotes are so crass. It’s not up to anyone else to determine what amount is negligible/write off in someone else’s life. Especially when someone clearly states that it’s significant for them. “Even if” it’s $40.

OP, I don’t have helpful info but just wanted to validate you.

Raven in mt pleasant (can bring your own food!) and Reliable Tavern in petworth. Solid neighborhood spots (along with the regular spots like red derby and looking glass)
