Anything by Dan Brown. The Da Vinci code was trite and lazy. Robert Langdon is the most Mary Sue character I've experienced in adult fiction.

I second the Pratchett suggestion! The disc world series is wonderful and silly. The classics look good on shelves but they're not for everyone.

I donated plasma at least once a week in college and grad school to help pay for rent. You can make around 100 dollars a week and sometimes they run specials, especially for new donors. I still donate occasionally.

If that is your opinion of his books, I might say you didn't have many to lose in the first place.
