Reply to Actors who went to Acting School vs Actors who did not. Which list do you prefer? by Dry_Western_2342
Montgomery Clift could easily be placed on either list because he started as a child actor and was already an accomplished and fully formed actor before he reached his 20's. At 23 he took acting classes at The Actors Studio under Robert Lewis who is probably the most forgotten of the three original method acting teachers. The other two were Stella Adler (who Marlon Brando studied under) and Lee Strasberg (who James Dean studied under).

When Kevin Smith made Clerks he filmed it in black and white and shot it in mostly in the store.

I don't think it's his physical age. It's the fact he's old in Spirit and doesn't have the drive and ambition he once had. There are some artists that flourish and continue to grow right into the twilight years of their lives while others lose it.

I think this depends on what area you live in. There are still many places that have heavy unemployment.

Reply to Best Actors in History: the ones who went to Acting School versus the ones who didn’t. What list do you prefer? by Dry_Western_2342
I think Jack Nicholson and Bette Davis are the best of the actors with no schooling that didn't start out when they were kids or teenagers. Most of the actors on the list who are not trained at school started working as minors and already had a foot in the door by the time they achieved success as adults.
