TIL the first official subway train pulled out to head uptown on Oct. 27, 1904. The mayor, George B. McClellan Jr., was on hand to start the train, but was so enthralled that he held onto the silver controller handle and drove the train all the way to Broadway and 103rd Street.

Reply to comment by Irimee in TIL JFK Jr's nickname, "John-John", was because a reporter misheard JFK calling him "John" twice in quick succession and the name was not used by his family. by mankls3
